BULGARIA BEAT AUSTRIA 16-0, MISFITS RECEIVE THE OTTOMANS THIS SATURDAY!
 |
Pernik (by Vesso Stoyanov)
In the
soggy conditions on Saturday afternoon,
Bulgarian XV managed to claimed its first ever victory 16-0
over the rejuvenated team of Austria, and hopes for staying in Pool 3B of
ENC (European Naitons Cup) are still alive.
The
game started really hot on and off the field. Midway through the first half
a hailstorm hit hard and so did our ferocious pack led by Misfit
Antonio Ivanov and Bobby
"Big
Brother" Borissov
who crossed over for the first of the two tries.
|
|
In the
dying minutes before the break, Antonio was undeservedly sin-binned, but
Pernik winger Liudmil Zlatkov streched the lead landing a sweet
penalty.
The
visitors tried to fight back at the second hand, but to a little avail.
Following another good movement, Pernik's captain Daniel Simeonov saw
the gap and dived in the in-goal to seal the victory.
|
 |
Lithuania
is still topping Pool 3B, followed by Hungary and Norway. Bulgaria is
still relegation threatened, especially if Austrian Rams will beat their one
time compatriots from Hungary on June 6.
Asked
if he would joinin Murphy's
Misfits for their coming home
Dead Duck
game vs Istanbul
Ottomans next weekend, Antonio Ivanov (pictured

"I'm
in, notwithstanding my duties with Varna VII!" |

MISFITS WITH THE WOODEN SPOON!
After a campain blighted by injuries,
including the loss of Kevin Ogley, Murphy's Misfits squad went into
its 7th Sofia 7's itching to get their hands on some of the trophies on
hand. Svetlozar Vassilev, Vesso
Stoyanov, Nicky Hinov, Kaloyan Pishmanov, Kalin Badankle, Stefan
Hranov, Stefan Doychev, Vladi Topchiev, Bryan Turner, Lincoln Frager and
Paul Mascaro represented the club colours against the likes of Badly
Packed Kebab (UK), Ukraine National VII, NSA,
Berkovitza and Mercury.
|
 |
It was the very first time
we got the wooden spoon, but like always there were some flashes of
brilliance with the ball in hand.
Great credit is due to
Kevin Ogley who ran the warmups and the team like a real professional
manager.
And Lincoln Frager
proved to be a talented interpreter from Bulgarian into English during the
opening ceremony!!!
Ukraine won 2008 Sofia
7's, but our injury-hit squad had to face yet another challange against
the visiting Whitney RFC on the main stadium, generously granted by
Nikolay Kolev. |

 |
Our team trailed 0 - 30 at
half time, so we decided to replace the ref (Vesso) with a man from the
visitors.
It was to a little avail,
and surprisingly the second ref was our pickup for Man of the Match.

WOLVES OF KRUSEVAC KEEP THE BALKAN SHIELD!
 |
Saturday April 12 vs. Krusevacs
10-36
Sorry to say but the Balkan Shield is on its way back to
Krusevacs.
We did have our moments but we kind of ran out of steam
and Krusevacs did have the advantage over us in game experience and speed
around the park. Game was played in good spirits and we will have to take a
strong team to Krusevacs to win back trophy.

MISFITS WEAK IN THE MOUNTAINS!
|
Misfits lost 7-48 their first away game for the season after
traveling to Gabrovo on Sunday.
After
winning
31-12 the first game with Yantra Gabrovo in 2005 and the
spectacular
21-21 draw in 2006, now it was time for the Misfits to watch
Yantra's triumph.
The local team showed
much pace and skills for the Misfits B team. With most of the key players
staying in Sofia for different reasons, it was a great opportunity for the
visitors to put several young guns through a baptism of fire.
."Even
though we went down by a big margin-it was a great day. Real rugby in the
country. Very wet muddy conditions but game played in good spirits." said
Misfits president Murray Te Huki
"We
drunk a lot more beer then tries we scored. Rakia really tasted good after
hot showers. Hospitality was great. We taught them the haka. Congrats to
Dani and Stefan playing their first game of rugby." he added
Misfits second rower
Andy Lang (pictured right with the ball) had a different perspective on
the trip:
"We actually won...Who
has the drunken American. A Misfits bus trip would not be the same
without Lincoln Frager" (picture below)

MISFITS WIN 27-10 THEIR FIRST MATCH THIS SEASON!
|
Misfits made a great
start of the new season with smashing Mercury RC 27-10 at
Murrayfield, NSA in Sofia on Saturday (22-0 at half time).
The men in green outscored
the visiting team by 5 tries to 2, but more importantly, they showed that
they can still produce moments of good rugby with so many new faces in the
squad.
Misfits played smart
controlling the game with keeping the ball in the forwards. It was
Bulgaria's big N8 Antonio Ivanov (pictured left with the ball) who
was Man of the match. He was the amazing leader of his pack
scoring two tries and one conversion and was also a monster in defense.
Misfits hooker Boyko
Kolev broke his left ankle in the opening 2 minutes of the game, but his
teammates remained solid in the scrums. |
 |
|
The visiting team could barely cross the
central line during this first period of the game with some more spectacular
tackles executed by Misfits flanker Simon Harris and the backs
Bryan Turner, Kaloyan Pishmanov and Lincoln Frager.
The final score could be even more
impressive if Misfits flanker Doctor Svetlozar Vassilev didn't
overcross the try zone, but he was too fast that day.
In fact Misfits score just one try during
the second period and their opponents had two but still it was the better
team who won. |

MEDIA LOVE MISFITS!
 |
Murphy's Misfits RFC were one of the
top stories on the breakfast show of Bulgaria's most popular TV channel
bTV on Monday morning. The 3
minutes short film showed Misfits' latest practice and interviews with
players and club president Murray James Te Huki (left).
"We are not good, we just have loads of
fun" said El Presidente with a smile.
The entire film can be viewed on
this location.
A preview of Misfits' new season has also
being published by the Sofia Echo - (Bulgaria's weekly
English-language newspaper). Find the article
here.
